Hair loss can pose severe damage to a person’s self-esteem. It can be caused by a number of factors, including stress, irregular sleeping schedule, lack of nutritious diet, and a sedentary lifestyle. According to a study conducted by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), as many as 58% of the male population between the age of 30-35 experience male androgenetic alopecia (ADA), or male pattern baldness.

However, science and technology have come up with many techniques to provide a permanent solution to those suffering from hair loss. There’s hair transplant, stem cell therapy, laser light therapy, chemical procedures, and several other alternative treatments. While hair transplant is the most popular choice for thinning hair, before booking a hair transplant in Mumbai or any other city, it is essential for people to acquaint themselves with the various hair loss treatment options. Here is a list of the hair loss treatment options that hair loss sufferers can take into consideration:

Hair transplants:

The most popular procedure of choice for hair loss, hair transplants offer a permanent solution to balding. Many methods are prevalent for hair transplants: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), Aesthetic Hair Implants (AHI), Robotic Hair Restoration, etc. Across all these hair transplant techniques, the fundamental principle remains the same; hair grafts are extracted from donor areas (usually at the back and sides of the scalp) and are then implanted into areas that experience balding. The reason hair transplant methods are so successful is that the hair follicles are extracted along with their roots, these roots are naturally resistant to DHT, the hormone that causes balding.

When performed correctly, the resulting growth after the implantation mimics the natural growth in the donor regions in the scalp. While the initially implanted hair will fall off within two to three weeks of implantation due to shock loss, new growth will gradually appear over the course of nine to twelve months.  The only drawback of this technique is that it forms a linear scar in the donor area, which might pose a problem for men who wish to wear their hair short. However, no scarring takes place when it comes to newer techniques like Aesthetic Hair Implantation (AHI).

Laser light therapy:

The laser light therapy is a non-invasive procedure that uses lasers, or light energy below a specific energy threshold and within a particular wavelength to stimulate hair growth. Also known as low-level light therapy (LLLT), the light sources used for this technique range usually between laser and LED devices. The laser devices used in this procedure are also referred to as cold lasers as they produce no heat. Therefore, these lasers are safe to use and pose zero damage to skin or hair follicles.

The laser light therapy method promotes hair growth in both men and women who show symptoms of androgenetic alopecia. The laser light gets absorbed in the hair cells, thus triggering enhanced cellular therapy. LLLT is considered to make ageing cells active, and this characteristic contributes towards its effectiveness in promoting hair growth. This treatment works best on the patients who have thinning hair and pattern baldness caused by a hereditary condition.

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP):

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a partially non-invasive procedure that disguises baldness developed in the ten to fifteen years prior to the consultation for treatment. An ideal procedure for patients with a low density of donor hair areas, this procedure tattoos the scalp with tiny dots that resemble the appearance of stubble or a short crew cut. This method causes no scarring and besides curing baldness, can also be used for hiding hair transplant scars, or for concealing small areas of thinning hair for a generally denser look.

SMP is also a good alternative for men who suffer from alopecia universalis, or complete hair loss, and possess no natural donor hair for a hair transplant or cell therapy treatment. Unlike conventional tattooing, SMP does not penetrate the skin as deeply, and the colour of the ink can be matched to patient’s previous hair colour and skin tone. The only drawback of this technique is that the tattoos fade over time and need to be replenished approximately every eighteen months.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP):

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss is a non-surgical procedure that extracts the patient’s blood and processes it in a centrifuge to separate the enriched cells (PRP). These enriched cells are then injected back into the patient’s scalp. The platelet-rich plasma cells contain proteins that stimulate natural hair growth. Not only are the results of PRP technique faster than other treatments, but it is also safer than other hair restoration methods, and hence is the first choice for doctors who offer hair transplant in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, and other similar cities. While there are very few disadvantages associated with the PRP treatment, yet, in some cases, the injection of plasma into the skull may cause tissue damage. However, the instance of its occurrence is rare, and only 5 out of 150 patients may face this.

Hair loss is a pervasive problem in India and around the world, and one that transcends both age and gender. With advances in medical science that provide a variety of ways to reverse signs of hair loss, increasing number of men and women are finding a fuller head of hair with restoration methods. However, while many methods treat hair loss and baldness, it is essential for patients to consult a licensed practising surgeon to determine which treatment would be best for their condition.
