Pitbulls between the Past and Present in a Portrait

The American Pitbulls Terrier appeared for the first time in Europe, and it’s a combination of English Terriers and English Bulldogs to create a robust, reliable, and hard-working breed. Brought later to the United States, the breed is renamed Staffordshire Terrier to be used primarily for hunting, herding, and even as messengers on the battlefield.

Today, Pitbulls are pets loved by several people for their friendliness and remarkable strength. Most Pitbulls that we receive at the shelter are crossed with other breeds such as Labrador, husky, or boxer. This illustrates the great differences in size, color, and behavior. We cannot confirm the breed of an animal unless we have his Canadian Kennel Club papers. We rely primarily on the physical and behavioral characteristics of the animal to establish its breed.

For my part, my story with Pitbulls began the first day I started working at the shelter. Before working on it, I had never been in contact with Pitbulls. Like many people, I had preconceived ideas about this breed by researching and reading many articles. I imagined these would be threatening dogs, difficult to approach, and delicate to control.

And then I met Spotlight a beautiful black and white dog that we hosted at the shelter. She was incredibly kind and sensitive.

I spent a lot of time with her, and I discovered an extremely intelligent dog that I never came across previously, would be a joke if I tell you I was wearing it home-made dog clothes to see the harmony of intelligence and cuteness on it. She had a thirst for learning and stared at me with extreme intelligence. I always had the impression that she spoke to me with her eyes, conveyed to me her joy at watching me or her sadness to stay in her cage at night. I have never seen a dog take a biscuit more gently than Spotlight. For her, there was nothing better in the world than a hug and massage session. I wholeheartedly would say it was a perfect dog! What a pain to have let her go to her new family.

And now, I was in the camp of the Pitbulls lovers!

A long series of Pitbulls followed at the shelter, and I always got amazed by this intelligent Spotlight breed at each of our meetings. These dogs do not only have a thirst for learning, but they love the company of humans.

At the shelter, the Pitbulls are treated like other dogs, and we always take into consideration their characters and abilities during the evaluations. However, we believe that these dogs can become dangerous under the wrong hands, like all other breeds elsewhere. That is why we are always vigilant when adopting dogs whose stature can cause more damage in case of a bite.

In recent years, the media has portrayed the Pitbulls as killing machines and monsters. It is important to note that these cases do exist, but are exceptions. All races have their peculiarities, and dangerousness does not belong to a race.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi Dog Breed

The Welsh Corgi is a type of dog whose traditional function was cattle herding. Two breeds of Welsh Corgis are recognized. Both are named after adjoining agricultural counties in southwest Wales, United Kingdom. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi are named after Pembrokeshire and Cardiganshire, respectively.

The Pembroke ancestry is attributed to imports from central Europe while the Cardigan is attributed to settlers from Scandinavia. The geographical distance between the two counties may have contributed to the distinction between the two breeds. When the two counties shifted from cattle to sheep, the small-sized herding dog was unsuitable for sheep.

Farmers in Cardiganshire started to cross-breed their Welsh Corgi with the Welsh Sheepdog. The merle color of the Cardigan Welsh Corgi was a result of this cross-breeding. This color is absent in the Pembroke Welsh Corgi.

The first documented appearance of the Welsh Corgi in dog shows was in 1925 after the Cardigan Welsh Corgi breeders, and the Pembroke Welsh corgi breeders formed a club. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi became the more popular breed when Princess Elizabeth (Queen Elizabeth II) was given one as a gift from her father on her 18th birthday. She was able to breed ten generations from her original Pembroke Welsh Corgi, and personally owned as much as 30 dogs at one time.

Bred for Looks

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi has a longish body and short legs. At 10-12 inches height, they easily avoided the hooves of the cattle. Compared to the Cardigan and their Dachshund relatives, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a bit shorter.

The Pembroke Welsh Corgi head is fox-like in appearance. Its ears are straight and somewhat pointed.

The colors of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi include fawn, black, tan, red, and sable. There are white markings on the body, face, necks, and legs. Pembroke welsh corgi breeders warn that the merle color in Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a result of cross-breeding and call such dogs “mutts.”

Easily trained and adaptable, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is an active and eager pet. Their size makes them comfortable in city apartments, and their liveliness makes them as good as countryside pets.

Taking pets with you travelling, for either relocation or vacation purposes, can be a nightmare. It can be hard to find ways of conveniently taking your pet with you, whilst keeping them safe, healthy and comfortable. We tend to forget that our four-legged companions need a little extra to keep them safe when travelling as well, leading to unforeseen problems and injuries. Here are some safety tips on how best travel by car with your pet.

Getting in

This isn’t usually one we think of, but joints of older or frailer dogs can be damaged by them jumping into the boot or seat of your car. And while smaller dogs can simply be lifted inside, larger dogs are more difficult to carry. Doing so strains yourself and can be uncomfortable for your dog as well. This is at the top of my safety tips simply because it’s such an easy thing to overlook, but can cause some serious problems if you’re not careful. Smaller dogs can break their legs from just a few feet and can put some serious strain on all dogs.

So make sure you’re using something like a dog ramp to help your pet climb up into your car, without any risk. Decent dog ramps are non-slip and have high-grip surfaces so that they can get up easily and large rubber feet to give a stable platform and also to protect your car from any scratches or scrapes the ramp would otherwise cause.

Keeping them safe in accidents

A surprising amount of people let their pets roam free in their car whilst driving. While it’s convenient and easy to keep them unrestrained, it poses a serious risk to both them and anyone in the car. If you stop suddenly or get into an accident, your beloved pet becomes a deadly high-velocity ball of fur, risking both their life and yours. This is another important part of safety tips, as it can seriously injure passengers.

Bring lots of water, and remember to never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle. Temperatures in a car can easily reach 70C on a hot day (158 Fahrenheit!), so it’s really not worth the risk.
