History and ancient roots

The oldest record of astrology in the Vedic culture goes back all the way to the Rig Vedas, recorded almost five thousand years ago.  However, Vedic Astrology is not the oldest source! Indo-Europeans acknowledged astrology as early as in the 3rd millennium B.C.

Astrology, since its inception, has reached to understand human behavior and the essence of our interactions through celestial influences and movements. Some sources state that it sprouted as a practice when humans began making conscious efforts to measure and predict the changes in seasons, taking astronomical cycles as reference.  Evidence of this goes back twenty-five thousand years when the moon’s influence on tides was observed and recorded, and communal calendars came to existence.

Astrology has been found to have prevailed in multiple ancient civilizations like Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Assyria, some South-African cultures, and India. Over time, many of these civilizations perished and so did their astrological systems.

This is believed to be one of the two reasons contributing to Vedic Astrology’s popularity and success in today’s world. Astrology or Jyothisam was a Vedic Ritual that was part of the Vedangas, the six supporting principles of the Vedas.

Vedic astrology is also observed to be one of the most accurate systems of measuring and calculating the movements of celestial bodies.  The practice is rooted deeply into the foundation of scholarly studies, observations, spirituality, and experience that is said to be etched within each of us through our previous lives.

The word ‘Jyotish’ is derived from the Sanskrit language, translating to the science or study of light. Traditional Jyothisam consisted of rigorous studies and practices that were always passed down from Guru or teacher to the student orally.

The shift to writing down observations and translating them into diagrammatic representation only sprung between the 17th and 19th centuries. Through the centuries, this practice has been molded and adjusted to better understand present-day dynamics.

The foundation of the Vedic practice lies in the notion of ‘Bandhu’ (relative/ family/bond) from the scriptures. This refers in particular to the connection between every living being, microcosm, and macrocosm. This practice relies on the moon and the sidereal zodiac, where signs are defined relative to the backward movement of stars.
