Nevertheless, one more area of its use exists that often causes troubles to the poor housewives, and that is furniture.

Keeping upholstery neat is a challenge but doing that with polyester requires certain care, don’t you think? This material tends to shrink significantly but as an upholstery, it has other yet also tricky nuances regarding care.

If this is a point of concern for you, too, welcome to the most detailed instruction on how to keep polyester upholstery clean easy, and fast!

Cleaning Synthetic Upholstery With Your Own Hands

Let’s clarify one thing at once: if you have an opportunity to hire a professional cleaner to perform this work, reading this article will hardly be necessary for you.

But those who have to deal with couches spotted with ice cream or covered with your beloved cat’s or dog’s hair, again and again, these people know how important it is to be able to manage that mess quickly and with the minimum of effort!
Polyester couches are probably way less troublesome compared to the velvet ones when it comes to cleaning, but even such a durable and universal material needs some skill to clean it correctly.

Fortunately, we know the simple method of making your couch neat and good-looking again!

What will you need to perform some cleaning magic?

  • a vacuum cleaner
  • baking soda powder
  • warm water
  • any liquid detergent
  • something to wipe it with e.g. rag or a paper towel

So, shall we begin?

  1. Start with preparing the sofa. Vacuum it to delete any debris or dust, otherwise, you will be simply spreading them all over the piece of furniture while washing it. Don’t be lazy and remove all the cushions both from the seat and those from the back
  2. If you notice any fresh marks on the upholstery, blot them quickly to absorb the liquid, but don’t press too hard to avoid the liquid from getting deeper into the furniture!

If the couch surface has no blots, proceed to step four.

If the blots exist, go to the step three first.

  1. After the wet marks are blotted, sprinkle a quarter cup of baking soda over them and leave for nearly fifteen minutes. The powder will absorb the moisture so that you could vacuum it later.
  2. Now that the couch is pre-treated (if it needed that), it is time to prepare a cleaning remedy.

Get one quart of warm water and two or three spoonfuls of detergent, and dissolve the agent making a foamy blend. If the area that must be cleaned is big enough, feel free to take more of the product.

  1. The next stage is to work on the surface of the couch. It’s ok to use a clean sponge but the cloth will also do. Immerse it in the foamy remedy, wring out, and carefully treat the stained areas scrubbing the solution softly into the fiber.

No need to do it vigorously, otherwise the dirt will only get deeper. Gentle circular moves from out to the center will be the best.

After the couch is treated, leave it until the furniture is dry. It’s good if the room where it is standing is well-ventilated and you can open the window to let more air in – like that, the upholstery will dry faster.

Handy Tricks To Know About

Cleaning couches and sofas have certain nuances that are handy to know, especially if you’re not doing that regularly.

To keep your furniture in a good state and don’t ruin it by washing, take the following into account:

  • Check the couch tag

The care tag will have one of the letter combinations: W (water cleaning), S (solvent cleaning), SW (either water or solvent cleaning), or X (professional cleaning only). Clean the item according to them.

  •  Choose the right treatment

Again, hanging on the tag’s letter, pick up the proper remedy: W for upholstery cleaner, S for dry cleaning solvent, and SW for both of the previous means.

  • Brush it

After applying cleaners, couches may feel a bit stiff. To soften the upholstery, simply brush it with a soft brush against the fiber.

  • Test the solution

Always try the remedy before applying it. Some cleaning products can be very strong so it is better to test it on a small part of the upholstery first.

With this knowledge, your couch will look like new no matter what!
