What good is having a yard if you can’t enjoy it? Can’t you picture yourself sitting outside enjoying the shade with an iced cold drink in your hand? What’s stopping you?
You’re not the only one who enjoys your yard. Mosquitoes enjoy it just as much and once they know you’re there; they’ll like it even more! It’s time to take your yard back from those pesky insects.
To prevent getting bit up while spending time outside, you’ll want to try a few DIY mosquito control tricks. Be sure to read our guide below to learn about the best DIY mosquito control tricks you should start trying today.
Here’s everything you need to know!
- A Strong Fan and Some Mesh
There are some backyard mosquito control DIY tricks that’ll help keep the mosquitoes away at all times, but there’s also one trick that’ll help keep them away specifically while you’re outside. The fan and mesh trick is best used when you’re sitting outside next to it because you won’t want to leave your fan on while not there.
The part of the trap that draws the mosquitoes to the fan is your body. If you’re planning a nice evening in your back yard, then we recommend setting up a strong box fan and some mesh. Try to use a fan with the strongest pull power you can find.
The stronger the fan is, the more effective it is. You’ll want to attach the mesh screen on the outside of the fan (when the mosquitoes fly near the fan, it’ll pull them in, and they’ll get trapped in the mesh). When you’re ready to go inside for the night, you can spray the mesh with alcohol.
This will kill the trapped mosquitoes. Just be sure not to spray the alcohol onto the fan’s blades. Each time you sit outside, place this DIY trick nearby, and hungry mosquitoes won’t be able to reach you!
- All the Right Kinds of Plants
There are several plants that naturally repel mosquitoes. You might find that some people tried using a mosquito repellant plant and had no luck. You can repel mosquitoes using all the right kinds of plants if you do it correctly.
For example, the first step is knowing what plants repel mosquitoes. The second step is creating an oasis in your yard using multiple variations of them. A mistake people make is thinking they only need to buy one of these plants, place it in their yard, and then reap the benefits.
Although the mosquitoes won’t fly to the plant, it won’t be enough to repel them completely. Instead, purchase several of these plants. Plant them all along your home’s exterior wall.
Hang them from your porch. Place them on your patio table. Pot some of them and set the pots around your patio area.
The more you have of these plants, the better this trick will work. You can even put some in pot hangers and hang them from your trees as well!
- A Sweet Illusion
This next DIY home mosquito control trick is one you might have heard of, or something similar. To create this trap, you’ll need the following:
- 1 2-liter bottle
- 2 cups of water
- 1 cup of vinegar
- 2 cups of sugar
- 2 banana peels
Use a funnel to pour all of the ingredients (except for the banana peels) into the bottle. You can use the handle of a wooden spoon to push the banana peels into the bottle.
Once you have everything in the bottle, shake it up a bit. Then, take a fishing line or a strong piece of string and hang the bottle from a tree branch. Be sure to select a strong and sturdy tree branch.
The mixture can become quite heavy, and you won’t want to pull the entire branch down to the ground. The next step is to leave the mixture hanging there and allow it to do its job. Once it becomes full of insects, you can pour it out and make a new one!
- A Light and Dish Soap
This next trick is quite simple and shouldn’t take you too long to whip up. All you need is some water, a teaspoon of dish soap, a lamp, and a tall/slender container. Find a container that’s tall and slender and fill it 1/3 of the way with water.
You’ll then want to take a teaspoon of dish soap and mix it in. You should see a few bubbles when mixing, but they should be minimal. If there aren’t any bubbles, then add a bit more soap.
You’ll then take a lamp and direct its light over the solution. You can even use a stick, duct tape, and a flashlight to create the lamp. Place this trap where you think it’d be best.
The mosquitoes will be attracted to the light, land in the water, and become stuck due to the soap.
The Professionals
When all else fails, it might be time to call in the professionals or use some of the best mosquito control products on the market. Professional exterminators will come to your home and use sprays and other methods that’ll keep the mosquitoes away.
If you have pets or small children, then try to find a company that uses all-natural solutions only. You can also consider going into the stores and purchasing your own products to use in your yard.
